Apple’s finally added the much awaited AVIF image support in latest versions of Safari on both iOS (16) and macOS (13). You may read the official release notes on WebKit’s official blog.
AVIF, for those who aren’t aware of it, is the latest codec to deliver optimized images over the Internet. It supports transparency, HDR, wider color gamut. But that’s not it - AVIF also supports animated images; which means they we now have a better alternative to GIFs.
Browser compatibility is one of the most common issues all web developers struggle with. AVIF support in Safari should make a lot of developers happy.
What do you think about this new development?
PS: Gumlet was world’s first company to add AVIF image optimization and delivery. Do check out Aditya’s blog post about it.
